About the project

In the Uganda 2024 project, we handed over 11 unconditional cash transfers to people living in extreme poverty. Each transfer amounted to 1,000,000 Ugandan shillings, equivalent to around US$270.

The project region was the rural Busoga region near Kamuli, one of the poorest regions in Uganda. All the people we supported lived on far less than US$2.15 a day, the international line for extreme poverty.

The target group was mainly women, as they have been shown to use the money particularly sustainably and for the benefit of the whole family. The project was led by Lukas Neuwirth and carried out in partnership with Makerere University in Kampala.

What the families did with the money

Doreen

Opened a roadside shop selling rice, maize, vegetables and spices and increased her income tenfold.

Bwezi

Expanded her mango sales, bought a solar panel and opened a second stall on the main road to Kampala.

Joy

Previously earned less than 80 cents a day. With her new roadside shop, she increased her income fifteenfold within four weeks.

Habiba

At 74, she single-handedly looks after more than ten grandchildren. She opened a shop with a fridge and hired a sales assistant.
